1. Introduction

At PSI, we support two major open-source version control systems, Subversion and CVS.

The Concurrent Versions System (CVS) is “the dominant open-source network-transparent version control system. CVS is useful for everyone from individual developers to large, distributed teams”.

The goal of the Subversion project is to build a version control system that is “a compelling replacement for CVS” in the open source community.

The central AFS file server infrastructure is used at PSI to keep the Subversion and CVS repositories. In this way both the backup problem and the problem of defining access privileges to the repository can be solved.
