- Welcome to PSI, what services
are available to you on Campus?
- Printing and in particular Guest Net
Room Information,
Accessing your Home Site
- At PSI you have free access to basic Internet Services. As a guest at PSI,
you might need to access your home site computer or data. Whilst you may use
Telnet, you will not be able to receive
X-Displays at PSI unless you use Secure
Shell (SSH) with X11 Forwarding set instead of TELNET. With AFS you should be able to reach your
AFS data World Wide. However, please remember that restrictions are maybe in
place at your home site which do not allow you access from outside.
VPN to your home campus or into the PSI intranet can be used from the wlan/guest net.
At PSI reasonable access restrictions are in place for security reasons, please contact the helpdesk if you are having difficulties. There is often an easy or alternative solution.
Items available to borrow or rent
- You might have forgotten to bring items with you, such as an ethernet cable
with you or a power socket adapter. Check out what
is available to you and where you can borrow or rent such items.
Detailed information concerning File Systems at PSI is only available
using Intranet Access.
-
FTP
:
- Users may also exchange files with non PSI users by means of our anonymous
FTP server. For security/protection against misuse reasons, there are
certain restrictions placed on the usage of this anonymous
ftp service. If required, you may apply for a ftp
project account which will provide you with more protected access or sharing
of your data.
-
SCP
- Secure Copy is available for both Windows and Linux clients to enable users
to transfer data. Furthermore a gui client to scp exists , namely Secure
iXplorer. Alternatively there is WinSCP,
another graphical scp client modeled after the Windows explorer.
Radiation Protection Test
Not a computing question but one you should know. For the Radiation Protection
Certification, enter the Building WHGA then, on the left just before the Library Entrance, you will find the Radiation Protection Test PC.
At PSI, users are responsible to be security consious and adopt the computing
security rules not just to protect their own systems and data, but to
help protect the PSI community. It is essential that you read and comply with
the IT regulations. This also applies to guests
and users who use PSI computing resources from home or other internet sources.
PSI's intranet is protected by a firewall and in addition a web proxy protection
service is also running to protect your systems from potentially infected
websites. The strategy is access is denied unless explicity given.
-
Passwords
- are not only there to protect your data, but also to protect access to the
PSI Network through your system! Please check our our password
policies.
-
Operating system updates
- are essential for all computers, not only those administered by AIT and
in particular all personal & home computers and guest laptops connecting
to our network should have the latest security patches installed, it is your
responsibility to the PSI community! In particular, Windows users should check
Windows update to ensure their system is up-to-date. If you install other
software on any computer used at PSI, you are also responsible for any relevant
security updates!
-
Antivirus protection
- which is up-to-date is essential on all systems which connect to the PSI
network. This also applies to all guest and home computers connecting to the
network! PSI computers use McAffee, but visiting guests and home windows users
are recommended to use a freeware, such as FreeAntiVir
which is available in german as well as english.
- Please note that failure to pay attention to the above items can very quickly
result in a denial of service (DoS) or interference of service for all PSI
users.
- PSI email is checked for known viruses before it is made available (virus-free)
to your mailbox. However, the rule applies: don't simply click on attachments
you are not expecting, if in doubt ask.
-
Spam:
- A PSI a professional Mail SPAM Filter Service is in operation for both incoming and outgoing mails. If you need to, you may login to check/delete the quarantined mails using your email address
and email password but this is usually not necessary. You may set
other further filtering options on your mail client as necessary.
-
Firewalls:
- Whilst PSI attempts to protect the network with a firewall and transparent
proxy server, there are situations where this might still be bypassed, e.g.
when an infected machine is brought in and connected internally to our network
- this can be a home computer via VPN or a guest computer on an experiment
line.
- For laptops and home systems and on other non PSI systems, we advise you
to use a firewall. This is particularly necessary for the current Microsoft
operating systems which are more liable to attack. The WindowsXP service pack
2 firewall solution from Microsoft integrates well and is currently being
used by most PSI WindowsXP systems. PSI Windows domain computers with SP2
will automatically receive the PSI policy firewall settings.
